One of the most prominent names in the computing and software arena over the past three decades has undoubtedly been Microsoft. The company whose owner is the unparalleled richest man in the world is responsible for billion people around the world and their livelihood. Steve Ballmer is one of the main men responsible for the rise of Microsoft as the leader in computing technology today.

Steve Ballmer was born in Detroit. His father was a manager at the Ford Motor Company and his family was an affluent one. Ballmer is of Swiss and Jewish ethnicity. He had fairly affluent childhood.


He attended the Detroit Country Day School on a scholarship and graduated with a perfect score on the mathematical section of the SAT. Then he enrolled at Harvard College from where he graduated magna cum laude with an A.B. in applied mathematics and economics. During his study period, he met Bill Gates and became friends.

Early career

In the starting period, Steve Ballmer picked up the job in Harvard Crimson Newspaper where he worked as a manager, also for Harvard advocate. Later, Ballmer joined Proctor and Gamble as an assistant product manager.


Ballmer’s college friend Bill Gates had dropped out of school to co-found Microsoft. After completing his first year at the business school, Ballmer approached his friend hoping for a summer job at his company. Gates instead asked Ballmer to take a full-time job managing the company’s operations.

The start at Microsoft

Steve Ballmer joined Microsoft after leaving the graduate school, becoming the first business manager to be hired by Gates. One of his earliest roles was to recruit competent employees for the growing firm. Despite not being a programmer himself, Ballmer possessed the knack to identify potential talent.

Business handling

Soon after, Microsoft signed a contract to create an operating system for IBM’s new line of personal computers. The co-founders of the company, Gates and his partner Paul Allen, busied themselves with the technical aspects of the company while Ballmer was assigned the responsibility of handling the business.

After Ballmer was made the CEO of Microsoft, he took over the reins of the company finances as well as its daily operations, making him one of the most powerful men in the world. Ballmer is responsible for shifting Microsoft’s attention from the first generation of PCs to pushing his weight behind cloud computing.

Ballmer though not short of his share of controversy, is one of the most inspirational and charismatic men in the history of business. Despite coming from a strong monetary background, he stuck to his guns and has created a legacy that will live on for many years. A visionary, he is responsible for the upward trajectory that Microsoft.

A great mentor

Despite of some misunderstandings between Ballmer and Gates, Ballmer takes a retirement from Microsoft but still he remains as a great motivator and a great mentor who has rubbed off on many of his employees who say that he has driven them on in a positive manner to become the leaders that they are today.
